About SusCompNet
Welcome
The Sustainable Composites Network - SusCompNet - was established in
early 2001 by the Warwick
Manufacturing Group and the BioComposites
Centre. SusCompNet was set up to advance the development and commercialisation
of sustainable composite materials
by encouraging an integrated approach in the supply chain. By engaging
academia, industry, the market and government it is expected that many
of the current barriers to the wider adoption of these materials will
be overcome. Some of the perceived barriers include:
- Political will
- Consumer and manufacturer perception
- Uncertainty over performance
- Concerns about the supply of raw materials
- Unquantified environmental benefits
The network membership currently numbers around 450 individuals and businesses,
encompassing the entire supply chain, from grower to final composite end
user and with industry representing approximately 40% of the membership.
Whilst the membership is mainly UK based, there is strong European and
world-wide participation.
In early 2002, SusCompNet secured three year's funding from the Engineering
and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) through the Sustainable
Technologies Initiative (STI), to help support its activities. The
network, nevertheless continues to rely mainly upon the "in-kind"
support of its members.
