SusCompNet 10

The Tenth meeting of the SusComp Network will take place on Friday June 8th 2007 at the Helsinki University of Technology in Finland. Further details and a registration form will appear here shortly.

SusCompNet 8

The Eighth meeting of the Sustainable Composites Network - SusCompNet 8 - was held on Wednesday May 4th 2005 at the University of Wales, Bangor, Gwynedd.

Previous SusCompNet meetings

SusCompNet 6

The Sixth Sustainable Composites Network meeting was held at the University of Warwick on 19th April 2004 and was hosted by the International Manufacturing Centre. Dr Nick Tucker welcomed guests to Warwick University.

SusCompNet 5

The Fifth Sustainable Composites Network meeting was held at Manchester Materials Science Centre on the 9th September 2003 and was hosted by Dr Steve Eichhorn. The event attracted around 40 delegates who were welcomed to UMIST by Dr Eichhorn.

SusCompNet 4

Professor Paul Hogg welcoming delegates to SusCompNet 4The fourth Sustainable Composites Network meeting was held at Queen Mary, University of London on the 22nd January 2003 and was hosted by the Department of Materials (http://www.materials.qmul.ac.uk/). Professor Paul Hogg, Head of Materials at QMUL, welcomed around 40 delegates to the one-day event. The meeting attracted a varied audience of industrialists, academics and other interested parties, including representatives of UK government departments and funding bodies. Members of the entire supply chain were represented including growers, processors, manufacturers and end users. Once again the event was attended by individuals from other European countries, including Denmark, Poland, Spain and Sweden.

Suscomp4, Conference room The formal presentations were preceded by lunch, giving delegates an opportunity to exchange ideas and views, to renew old acquaintances and to make new ones. Two sessions of presentations followed. In the first session, Paul Hogg provided an overview of the Department and its involvement in sustainable composite materials. Joint SusCompNet administrators Drs Nick Tucker and Mark Hughes reviewed the activities of the network since the previous meeting. The main outcomes have been the completion of the new website and the formation of new collaborations. The network now boasts a mailing list in excess of 450 individuals, 40% of whom are from industry and 10% from Europe.

An opportunity to discuss ideas and form new linksDr Robert Elias from CARM (the Centre for Advanced and Renewable Materials) presented, for the first time, the findings of a recently completed market study on the potential for renewable materials as feedstock for sustainable products. This study was commissioned by the Welsh Development Agency and executed by CARM. The executive summary and full report are available as free downloadable documents in our information section.

Suscomp4 DelegatesIn the second session, presentations were given by Dr Ton Peijs of the Department of Materials at QMUL and Mr Daniel Kenning of Splendid Engineering (http://www.splendid.gb.com/). Ton presented an alternative way of achieving sustainability in composites through easily recycled, novel, all (thermoplastic) polymer composites. Daniel presented work undertaken by Splendid Engineering on a sustainable concept car.

After the presentations, there was lively debate on a number of the issues raised during the talks.

SusCompNet would like to extend its thanks to the hosts - the Department of Materials at Queen Mary, University of London (http://http://www.materials.qmw.ac.uk/) and to the sponsors of the event - the Composites Processing Association Composites Processing Association (http://www.composites-proc-assoc.co.uk). Finally thanks to all the delegates who took part in the meeting, some of who travelled considerable distances to take part.

The Summer 2002 meeting was held on the campus of the University of Wales, Swansea (http://extraweb.swan.ac.uk/) and was hosted by the IRC in Computer Aided Materials Engineering (irc.swan.ac.uk) in collaboration with the Materials Technology Forum for Wales (http://www.mtfw.org.uk). With over 30 individuals attending, a number of stimulating presentations, posters and networking opportunities, the event proved to be a great success.

SusCompNet 2

The second meeting, hosted by the Advanced Composite Manufacturing Centre (http://www.tech.plym.ac.uk/sme/acmc/index.htm) at the University of Plymouth (http://www.plym.ac.uk/), was held on the 28 November 2001. SusCompNet2 attracted around 40 individuals, with representatives from Poland and Finland attending. The event consisted of informative presentations, an open debate and an opportunity to network.

SusCompNet 1

The inaugural meeting of the Sustainable Composites Network was held at the BioComposites Centre, University of Wales, Bangor, North Wales on the 28 June 2001. Academics and industrialists involved in fibre and composites processing, manufacture and agriculture attended the meeting. The meeting took the form of an open discussion, and helped to focus the future direction of the Network. This inaugural event was deemed to be a great success with around 30 delegates supporting the initiative.
