Paul Spencer – Director

As Pro Vice-Chancellor, Paul has strategic responsibility for improving research quality and preparing for the next REF, increasing research and industrial grant income, maintaining and building the University's industrial research network, maintaining and building research partnership networks, the University's innovation portfolio and the North Wales Growth Deal.

Paul received a B.Sc. degree in Applied Physics and a Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Bath. He was a research assistant on several EPSRC funded research projects at the University of Bath before moving to a lecturer post at Bangor University in 1996. He became a senior lecturer in 2003 and received a Personal Chair in 2006. In 2007 he was appointed Head of the School of Electronic Engineering, a post he held for seven years. In 2009 he was appointed Head of the College of Physical and Applied Sciences and in 2017 he was appointed Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering.

His main research interests are semiconductor laser dynamics, optical feedback effects, pulse propagation, and optical waveguide properties of optoelectronic devices. In 2000 he won the Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) best engineering award and he is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.

Graham Ormondroyd

Graham completed his PhD (Wood Science) at Bangor University, UK and has been the Head of Materials Research at the BioComposites Centre for 20 years and Professor in Wood Science since February 2023. In that time has written many proposals, papers and undertaken commercial works in all aspects of biomaterials science. Prof. Ormondroyd has over 100 publications including peer reviewed papers, conference proceedings, book chapters and edited books, he continues to publish regularly. Graham is Vice President and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining and a member of the International Research Group on Wood Protection.

Graham has an interest in the translation of scientific output into ideas that everybody can understand and make the concepts of the challenges that the plant faces and the solutions that are both here and around the corner accessible to all.

Adam Charlton

Adam is a materials chemist with 16 years experience working on contract research and collaborative R&D projects with industry.  Research areas have included new materials for the photonics and molecular electronics sectors and the synthesis of chemical intermediates for the pharmaceuticals industry.

Adam is currently focusing on biorefining, particularly biomass fractionation and extraction using different technologies including pressurised refining and green solvents.  He manages the BC BioProducts and BioRefining-Technology Transfer Centre and helped establish ‘The CO2 Lab’ – a pilot scale extraction facility investigating the use of green solvents, including supercritical fluids, at industrial scale.

Viacheslav Tverezovskiy

Viacheslav has 14 years experience in synthetic organic chemistry and has investigated a range of bio-based technologies collaboratively with industry. He has worked on a new bio-resin platform to introduce formaldehyde free resin from renewable oils. Other recent projects include phthalate free plasticizers and the development of a new genre of plant based antioxidants.

Viacheslav’s research activities are aimed at modification of renewables such as vegetable oils and other plant extracts into resins, active additives and value added chemicals. He currently leads projects on synthesis of natural pesticides and on production of PLA and PBS from organic waste.

Radek Braganca

Radek has a first degree in chemical engineering and studied for a PhD in Organic Chemistry here at Bangor University. Radek has an industrial background gained in the petrochemical industry and has over 10 years experience working in technology transfer. His role in the Centre is to identify and develop new collaborative projects linked to industry and funded through EU and UK sources. His research interests include the exploitation of industrial biotechnology in the adhesives, chemicals, coatings, plant protection, food and pharma sectors.

Campbell Skinner

Campbell is the Life Cycle Assessment lead at the Centre. He has worked extensively with LCA and carbon footprinting, in fields ranging from agriculture and horticulture, to bio-based product development, bio-refining and packaging. He has successfully led numerous LCA-based research projects and commercial contracts and has spoken widely on LCA, including as keynote speaker. He and the team have also worked with Social LCA, and have published a number of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) on behalf of industrial partners. As well as peer-reviewed papers, Campbell has written two book chapters, and is an Expert GHG emissions assessor for the EU's CINEA Innovation Fund.

Simon Curling

Simon is a Research Fellow with over 20 years of research experience in the use of natural products (e.g., wood, hemicellulose and cellulose, seaweed, plants, animal fibre) with a focus on environmental interactions, including biodeterioration and biodegradation, and physical, chemical, elemental and moisture analysis.

Simon's role within the management team is to coordinate Health and Safety within BC and he is a trained i-ACT Manager.

Simon is currently a section editor for the Wood Science and Forest Products section of the Forests Journal. Dr Curling is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, and sits as an observer member on the board of the Wood Technology Group of the IOM3.
